Council’s Community Development Coordinator Sarah Collis stated in her report to Council that this review proposes a new structure, policy and guidelines as a means of improving the processes.
A major part of this review centres around Council’s Community Grants Program. Demand for grant funding generally exceeds Council’s available grant budget so a review has been undertaken to ensure clarity of purpose and consistency in how allocations are being made.
In reviewing the recipients of grant funding over the past three financial years it has been identified that a number of requests do not meet the current eligibility criteria.
In particular, Council has been receiving several requests for “repeat grants” after a Council decision three years ago that uncontested annual donations were no longer assured but groups were welcome to apply via the annual donation scheme.
Councillors agreed at their August Ordinary Council Meeting that this wasn’t working as hoped and that provision should be made in future budgets for annual sponsorship of volunteer groups that add value to Leeton.
The following changes to the current Leeton Shire Council Community Strengthening Grant Scheme were adopted for public consultation:
Community Strengthening One off Grants
Revise the name of the stream to Community Strengthening Grants.
Do not fund repeat projects or events if previously funded.
Annual/Quick Response Grants
Allocate $6,300 to Quick Response Grant applications.
Allocate $2,000 to Youth Development Grant applications (Eight per year)
