The existing Leeton cemetery has served the local community since 1912, with Council taking over management from 1957. The current cemetery has about 5-7 years before it reaches capacity based on the current interment rate. Council has acquired additional land next door to expand the cemetery.
This DRAFT Masterplan aims to guide the development of the expanded Leeton Cemetery which should last for another 50-100 years, improve accessibility and recreational potential of the site, provide a quality space for reflection and remembrance for all cultures and provide opportunities for a range of interment choices.
In an effort to understand existing conditions, local demographics and current trends, Council has already engaged a variety of organisations to obtain feedback as users/stakeholders for the cemetery, which has informed this DRAFT. We are now seeking feedback from the wider community.
It would be great to hear back from you before we lock in the final plans and budget. Your feedback will assist Council to understand residents’ priorities in the short, medium and long-term.
DESIGN INTENT
The vision for the site is to provide a respectful and accessible cemetery space, in a scenic environment.
The aim of the Masterplan is to develop a unique layout for a unique town, reflective in its layout of the cultural heritage relating to the Walter Burley Griffin’s and the region’s agricultural heritage.
The Masterplan also respond to the community’s burial demand whilst considering its operational efficiencies and costs.
Parking is expected to occur along internal roads and in temporary carparks. All temporary carparks are to be reclaimed for burials/graves as the cemetery fills up.
It is expected that the Masterplan, if and when adopted, will be implemented in stages over many decades, in direct response to burial demand in the area.
Feedback can be provided to Council in any of the following ways:
