Consultation has concluded
Leeton Shire Council resolved at its June Ordinary Council Meeting held on Wednesday 28June 2017 to advertise proposed amendments to the 2017/18 fees for the Leeton and Whitton cemeteries for the following reasons:
1. Contractor fees have increased by $50, the first increase in 3 years.
2. Council received a request to consider reinstating the removal of the soil from the edge of a newly excavated grave during interment for a burial service. At present the soil is placed over adjoining graves and has caused distress to the families of people buried under the mound. It is believed by many residents that the soil from excavation next to the new grave does not present a sympathetic or professional approach. The mound of soil is also a WHS issue.
3. Council is now required to use wall shoring for dug graves in Whitton to prevent walls collapsing. This is a WHS consideration.
The proposed new cemetery fees for 2017/18 are:
1. Leeton Single Depth Grave Costs:
Current Fee: $3,200
Proposed New Fee $3,550 (includes $50 contractor increase and $300 soil removal)
2. Whitton Single Depth Grave Costs:
Current Fee: $2,765
Proposed New Fee $3,330 (includes $50 contractor increase, $215 wall shoring and $300 soil removal)

Some useful information as follows; The following Lawn Cemeteries and their Councils ALL remove the soil away and out of site from the graveside during a funeral service, Wagga Wagga, Coolamon, Griffith, Junee, Lockhart, and Narrandera. Yes it is an eyesore if left beside a grave and it does pose a threat with WHS issues. It also limits the seating / standing arrangements for families and attendees at a funeral service. As for the new proposed fee, Leeton is quite higher than most of the above mentioned shire cemetery fees; eg. Coolamon $2320.00, Griffith $2918.00, Junee $2106.00, Lockhart $2466.00, Narrandera $2579.00, Wagga Wagga $4011.00

I couldn't agree more with WardJ. I have made my view very clear on several occasions. Let's see what other members of the community have to say...

I have no objection to fee increase. My only comment be it unusual is that our community desires to complete the burial service by filling in the grave. I understand that pile of soil next to grave maybe an issue, but we have not experienced any problems however we experienced the most helpful assistance from Steven at our last funeral whereby at our request he left soil for us to fill in grave. Much appreciated. he also at a word removed the shoring so we could complete this service. To have the contractor waiting to soil to grave site is an extra expense for him.

The contractor fee is probably just a fee that justified is due to rises in other related expenses such as fuel ect however I'm uncertain as to why the removal of the soil should be charged to the family of the deceased. It is unsitely at a funeral, a large mound covered with artificial grass matting or a green tarp but how its that that family's choice to place it there right next to the grave for internment. It's just a simpler option for the back fill after the service is over. Why can't the dirt be placed under along the colour bond fence line or behind the vaults out of site. Would make for a much more memorable service as opposed to having to stand next to a pile of dirt whilst grieving. I believe the cost to remove the dirt should already be included in the expence of having the grave excavated. I'd be interested to see what other shires practice/charge in the situation.
